     Why A.I.?
     Why is A.I. more bio-secure?
Why not collect your own boars?
     Why choose WALDOai?

Why A.I.?

A.I. is a management tool that improves male reproductive efficiency. It is NOT a guarantee of top genetics or good herd health. As sows are confined and the intensity and quality of pig husbandry improves, A.I. becomes a cost-effective, profitable option.

Why is A.I. more bio-secure?

Herd bio-security is improved because live boars do not have to be continually introduced into the herd. In many cases, herd bio-security can be further improved by using A.I. to produce replacement gilts within herd. Most swine diseases cannot be transmitted in semen. A limited number can be transmitted. Odds of infection are comparatively low. NOTHING can eliminate all disease risk. But, from a practical standpoint, A.I. is far less risky than trying to manage the constant introduction of new live pigs into a herd.

Why not collect your own boars?

Some producers feel comfortable owning or leasing boars and then collecting and processing the semen themselves. Others like the efficiency and time-saving advantages of purchasing high-quality semen from a stud. Waldo Farms will work with each producer to determine which option will work the best for his/her operation. However, producers should know the risks of owning and/or collecting their own boars. The Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) of individual boars will change as more data are recorded on related pigs and EBVs are re-calculated. Over time, EBVs will go up on a few boars, remain stable for some but go down for the majority.  So, owning your own "AI" boars can be a genetic risk that you should consider. Another practical problem of boar ownership is that a boar might not produce high-quality semen on a given day. Custom collection can add more expense and risk. Owning your own A.I. boars may be the option you choose. But, first you need to understand the pros and cons of A.I. boar ownership.

Why choose WALDOai?

WALDOai boar centers have state-of-the-art semen processing and are directly linked and tightly integrated with an established and on-going genetic improvement program. WALDOai eliminates the genetic risk of owning your own boars or buying semen from a stud that has no control over the quality of genetics it merchandises. WALDOai boars are in the 90th percentile or higher using the latest BLUP-EBV rankings. WALDOai boars are HAL=1843nm (stress gene) negative. Waldo Farms retains ownership of all boars in our affiliate studs. If a boar needs to be replaced because his genetic level or semen quality is questionable, he is replaced. The WALDO name is your guarantee of top-notch genetics. WALDOai centers are located throughout the Midwest. They are committed to making A.I. work for you.
